Palm of the Galaxy

Ships and stations

Both The Empire and The Republic utilize standard designs for their ships. This is useful especially with the rate they are destroyed. Automated factories work non-stop to assemble all kind of space faring vehicles. One distinctive feature of some ships is the Space Fold drive coil. SF field has to cover the entire ship, and the best way to do that is using a giant, rotating, ring-like structure. Thus one can easily tell if a craft is SF-capable. Traveling without moving is something really special and requires quite some time for preparation of the entire vessel. Planet-range jumps may take minutes, but when it comes to interstellar folding, hours, and even days may be required. In the 24th century, space travel is still very dangerous. Radiation, extreme temperature variations, debris strikes, malfunctions can easily doom any spaceship. Shields are present only on the bigger, high-value combat ships as they are difficult to manufacture and maintain. Civilian vehicles have only enough armor to protect the crew from radiation, but military ones have multiple layers of radar absorbing composite and ceramic materials. As warfare is primarily projectile-base, the only active defense, proved its effectiveness is the point-defense cannon (PDC) - an high-caliber rapid firing turrets. They are also used offensively at close range. Propulsion is provided by boron plasma jets, thus the need of fuel. The heart of any ship is its Power Core - plasma or nuclear. All other systems depend on it and great efforts are taken for its safety and protection. Other systems can be generalized as weapons, scanners, propulsion, life support (always an independent and redundant), shields and Space Fold.

A very special class of craft - she can barely move on her own and possess just maneuvering thrusters. The main task of these ships is folding space and carrying good across the stars. They are enormous, bulky, mostly automated and have the best SF-calibrators in the Galaxy (unlike their civilian counterparts). These freighters never enter the battlefield, unless absolutely necessary, as they lack any kind of offensive or defensive capabilities. Osiris-type vessels are very expensive and rare.

[* I know it is written "Sulaco"] The "caviar" of the light cruisers in the Republican Star Fleet. Almost fully automated, tough and equipped with the latest tech, this ship carries primarily offensive strike-missions. Great for patrol/hunter duties, she comes at a hefty price - almost triple the one of her counterparts. If any, only two downsides can be pointed out - fairly tight crew/load space and short range jump drive. Unlike other designs, and to mask her radar signature, her SF coil is incorporated tightly to the fuselage.

Manta

manta

  • Effective scanner ranges:360km
  • Shield: yes
  • Armor: 5,4,2
  • Armament: 4 torpedo tubes, 4PDCs
  • Relative structural integrity: 200
Big, slow and tough as nails - this is how any military captain will describe this class of ships. The ship has impressive armor and devastating firepower. Any enemy, stupid enough to approach her at close range, will be shredded by the PDCs, covering almost 360° firing arcs. The dual-layer shield can take numerous radiation torpedoes. Although not capable of SF jumping, Manta can attach auxiliary SF field generators (which are ships on their own) to bring her to the battlefield. Primary duty - high orbital domination, minelaying, orbital strikes, recon mothership.

Stinger

Stinger
  • Class: Wasp
  • Type: Gunboat
  • Space Fold: no
  • Crew: 10
  • Dimensions: 120m, 60Gt

  • Shuttle hangar: yes
  • Maximum thrust: 7 GN
  • Effective scanner ranges: 200km
  • Shield: yes
  • Armor: 1,1,0
  • Armament: 2 torpedo tubes, 1PDC
  • Relative structural integrity: 30
Despite it's small size, the Stinger-like ships pack significant punch with their 4 hard-point mounted torpedoes. She relies on speed and nimbleness. Everything else in this craft is a compromise with its primary duty - orbital patrol. Some variants are even capable of in-atmosphere flight. First production began over 50 years ago and till this moment there are numerous models and improvements.

Medium-sized space liner, fitted for couple of hundreds of tourist. Her sphere-like observation deck creates the well-recognizable silhouette. The dome incorporates entire building-size structures, based usually on human history - from ancient Egypt to Post-Apocalyptic Earth renaissance - depending on the overall thematic of the particular ship. She is fairly luxurious, compared to the average recreational vessels. As most civilian vessels, she has no armament whatsoever. If in danger, the standard tactics of passenger/cargo captains is quick sequence of short-range SF jumps, followed by a longer one.

Belfast Summer

Belfast Summer

  • Maximum thrust: 4 GN
  • Effective scanner ranges: 100km
  • Shield: yes
  • Armor: 1,1,1
  • Armament: no
  • Relative structural integrity: 80
Derived from a long family tree of giant gas haulers, Belfast Summer is fairly generic transport ship. It can outfit different cargo platforms on her 4 mount points. This class of ships are rarely equipped with SF-drive, thus they carry their long trips inside system space. Their engines are designed to work optimal against the gravitational wells and are exceptionally effective.

Yuri

  • Effective scanner ranges: 100km
  • Shield: yes
  • Armor: 0,0,0
  • Armament: no
  • Relative structural integrity: 60
The most standard inner-system transport ship. Cheap and mass-produced, you can see such vessels everywhere, tugging various container and load-configurations. They need very small crew to operate and offer very modest living conditions. Vega-class ships are notorious with their unreliability, weak fuselage plating and demanding engine maintenance activities. Their crew hates them almost as much as the engineers, who have to repair them afterwards.

Progress

Both are common types of surveillance satellites, used to monitor vast areas in low orbit. If detecting a hostile target, they relay the information to the nearby security forces. Using weak lasers, they also "mark" their targets. Relatively simple and robust in design, such robotic platforms are widely used. The "LR" abbreviation stands for "long range" - these types of satellites have better and more sophisticated electronics and sensors.

Shuttle

Shuttle
  • Class: Dandelion
  • Type: Dropship
  • Space Fold: no
  • Crew: 2
  • Dimensions: 70m, 40t
  • Load capacity: 30

Shuttles are not named, but usually contain a sequence number from their mothership. Dandelion dropships are standard imperial vessels, used by the military. They carry 30 commandos and 2 pilots. Very reliable ... when not under flak fire (which is valid for any other ship). Planetary combat drops is the standard tactic when taking control of a outpost or area on the planet is necessary. Shuttles are its workhorse. Pilots, entitled with shuttle duties, are very brave and skilled, else their life-expectancy rapidly falls.
